What is Scan

Commonly referred to as the third of the three major "Check Systems" in the U.S., Scan (Shared Check Authorization Network) is an active network of merchants and institutions that provides instant check authorization to participant merchants in order to help businesses be able to service this type of payment without having to risk bad check writing. It works by giving real-time access to the SCAN database of bad check writers, and therefore allows merchants to make an informed decision about whether or not to accept a check from the customer presenting it.

The benefits that come with merchant SCAN membership include the increased sales that come with being able to provide this added form of payment. This is because many customers who prefer to pay with checks will often choose not to purchase goods and services at locations which reject this method of payment. But how, exactly, does SCAN's check authorization system work? As a shared database that collects information on potentially bad check writers, SCAN enables participant merchants to employ check reading equipment that coordinates with SCAN in order to determine whether or not the client presenting a check has a record returned checks or past account closures. SCAN is kept current by merchants continually submitting information on bad check writers as checks bounce. In fact, SCAN makes thousands of updates every night in order to ensure that its check verification system is up to date. Not only are more bad check writers continually entered in, but any mistaken entries are quickly rooted out.

In addition, SCAN is partnered with ChexSystems, which is another database that collects the information of customers who have had bank accounts closed in the past. While often used by banks in order to screen new accounts applicants, ChexSystems provides an added set of data to SCAN which helps to pull in more names of unwanted check writers.
